"Heaven nor Hell"

Films: Spawn (1997)

Alias: Malebolgia, Clown/Violator

Type: Mystical

Location: Eldritch location/Civilized Area

Height/Weight: Ranges from three times that of an average human to that of a skyscraper.

Affiliation: Evil

Summary: In the dark age of comic books, the shelves were adorned with "heroes" that did all sorts of unscrupulous things in the name of being edgy and cool. For the most part, it was wildly unpleasant, but there were some heroes who escaped the homogenous hate muck. One of them was Spawn, the demonic anti-hero who took on both Hell and Heaven...but sadly didn't get a good movie out of it.

History: A while ago, Al Simmons was shot and killed on his last Black Ops mission, and promptly sent to Hell for his crimes. However, he struck a deal with the place's ruler, Malebolgia, so that he could return to Earth and see his loved ones. Malebolgia agreed on the condition that he become the Hell knight known as Spawn, with a demon known as the Violator to keep tabs on him. But the Violator is bitter over not only not leading the legions of Hell, but having to wear a clown-like disguise in the mortal world. He schemes to kill Spawn as soon as possible.

Notable Kills: Nothing special.

Final Fate: After several battles with Spawn, the Violator is decapitated and sent back to Hell, but not before warning the hero that because he rejected Malebolgia's demands for him to be Hell's general, he will be forever haunted.

Powers/Abilities: Shapeshifting and some omnipotence.

Weakness: Other forces of Hell.

Scariness Factor: 2-John Leguizamo's performance as the Clown/Violator is quite creepy, if a bit cringeworthy at times. But none of that can forgive the atrocious CGI used for both him and his demonic master. This whole film is a testament to when cinema took the then-new ways of computer effects for granted.

Trivia: -Spawn in the comics not only is less inclined to be nice than his film counterpart, but he also singlehandedly took down God, who was an old lady for some reason. Thankfully, another person took the mantle of Spawn, and his greatest action was sparing humanity from Armageddon.

-Two sequels, "Spawn 2" in 1998, and "Spawn 3: The Ultimate Battle" for 1999, were planned but ultimately scrapped due to this film's bad performance.

The best heroes, basically.

For reference, here's the hero himself.

Finally! Something more palpable!
This isn't Hell, hero. You landed in New Jersey.

Even the FBI will have a problem here.

Cool guys don't look back at demonic monstrosities.
A gallery of screw-ups all around.

Violater, this isn't a good look for you if you want to scare people.

Crappy CGI or not, he's not someone you want to dissapoint.
